Common Questions For NVIDIA SHIELD

Cord cutting. Can I stream Sling, Hulu Plus, Netflix, HBOGo and Amazon Prime through this? I'm interested in this over the Roku 3. Pro's/Con's?

You can actually sideload the Amazon Video APP (until they sign an agreement, which may only hurt their FIRE-TV sales) It does work, on the device, the only gripe is that (for now) it doesn't appear on the home screen

after installation. You have to access it through the list of downloaded apps.

does this come with remote?

The "Nvidia Shield Android TV" comes with a $59.99 "Nvidia Shield Controller" for free in the box.

If you want a 'remote', you can either buy the $49 "NVIDIA Shield Remote" or use a compatible Logitech Harmony remote that works with the Nvidia Sheild's Infrared (IR) port.

Can I mount a windows share/ nfs partition and play videos/load games from there?

I don't know about playing games, but you can absolutely access your movies and videos from a "Windows Share" on your network.

I'm using the Kodi app (highly customizable) and the Plex app (less-customizable, but simpler and more streamlined to get started with).

I use both. They're great.

Plex comes pre-installed. The Kodi app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store (which comes pre-installed on Shield)

Does anyone know if a Logitech harmony remote will work with this?

Yes. I am controlling mine with a Harmony 650.

Currently, the number pad has no commands associated with it, so pressing "8-2-6" doesn't actually enter "826"... but this really doesn't have much use with Shield unless you are connecting it to a Live TV Tuner (HDHomerun View, for example) and want to change the channel.

Otherwise, the remote is working well.

EDIT: I now have full numeric pad support, as well as "escape", "enter", "backspace", and "delete" on Harmony 650 by pairing it with a FLIRC usb dongle.

Is this any good at emulation?

It works remarkably well (esp. the 500GB unit; you need that space for MAME and PS1 or other disc images. I did an unboxing showing off a lot of emulation. Check out those videos here: http://www.twitch.tv/greenrobotgamer/profile

Where it really benefits over the Shield Portable/Tablet is that because it is hardwired to power? The CPU isn't restricted and runs full speed. If you have questions specifically about a given emulator, I'll do my best to answer them

Can you use a keyboard/mouse/trackpad with this?

Yes, bluetooth or USB

How much usable free space is available out of the box on the 16gb model? Is there enough space to atleast store some movies and tv shows?

I believe there was about 12gb+ when I got mine. I would recommend just getting an inexpensive MicroSD Card or USB flash drive, and storing media on either of those. The Shield plays media fine from external devices using VLC which can be found in the play store.
